What is the Fritz Ascher Society?

The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art (FAS) tells untold stories of artists marginalized and persecuted by the German Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. By discussing, exhibiting and publishing their work, FAS commemorates their lives and artistic achievements and teaches about the Holocaust, furthering understanding of 20th-century history and dialogue about individuality and integrity under political tyranny.

Who was Fritz Ascher?

Fritz Ascher (October 17, 1893 – March 26, 1970) was a German artist known for Expressionist and Symbolist paintings, drawings, and poetry. Persecuted under the Nazi regime for being Jewish-born, he was interned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp and survived years in hiding in Berlin. His work was re-discovered in 2016 with an international retrospective and scholarly publication.
