SUMMARY:"Fritz Ascher: Themes and Variations"A Digital Exhibition Experience
DESCRIPTION:This digital exhibition includes important examples from the oeuvre of the German Jewish Expressionist artist Fritz Ascher (1893-1970). Ascher’s career extended from prior to the First World War until the late 1960s. However\, Ascher’s artistic trajectory was interrupted due to persecution under National Socialism\, and he spent much of the Second World War in hiding\, concealed in a family friend’s basement. Ascher’s work consequently encompasses both the vibrant artistic scene in early-20th-century Germany\, as well as the trauma and aesthetic shifts consequent of Ascher’s persecution and deprivations during the twelve years of the Nazi regime. \nThese selected works are representative not only of critical moments in Ascher’s personal and artistic development\, but also of key themes that occupied Ascher’s attention throughout his career. Variations in certain ideas\, motifs\, and subjects in Ascher’s work betray the traumatic impact of Nazi oppression as much as they equally speak to Ascher’s personal and artistic growth over time. Similarly\, Ascher’s persistent affection for particular subjects provides insight into Ascher’s fortitude as a human being: an individual who\, even in the most dire of circumstances\, continued to use music\, poetry\, and theatrical paradigms as lenses through which to engage with the world. \nPlease explore the multi-faceted content with videos and interviews\, photos and artworks\, short introductions and scholarly texts that can be discovered through the links in every image description!

SUMMARY:Pictures of Resistance: The Wartime Photography of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman Presentation by Sheri Rosenblum\, San Francisco (CA)
DESCRIPTION:In the forests of Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe\, Jewish partisan Faye Schulman carried two extraordinary weapons: a rifle and a camera. After witnessing the murder of her family and the destruction of her community\, she joined the partisans\, documenting daily life\, resistance\, and survival. Her photographs—taken while living and fighting with a partisan unit—are the only known images captured from within a partisan camp.\nThis presentation explores Schulman’s remarkable life through her wartime photography\, highlighting its historical significance and artistic legacy. Drawing from the Pictures of Resistance exhibition\, participants will discover how her images challenge misconceptions about Jewish resistance during the Holocaust while serving as enduring works of documentary photography and visual testimony. \nThis event is part of the online series Flight or Fight. stories of artists under repression in collaboration with the Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation (JPEF). \nImage above: Faye Schulman\, Forest near Lenin\, Winter 1944. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HEREFaye Schulman with Detachment\, Forest near Lenin\, Fall 1942. \n\nSheri Rosenblum is the Director of Operations\, Development and Programs for the Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation (JPEF)\, where she has served since 2011. She oversees the organization’s outreach and collaborations with Holocaust institutions and has built lasting relationships with Jewish partisan families. She is a frequent lecturer on Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. A graduate of UCLA in Judaic Studies and Brandeis University’s Hornstein Program in Jewish Communal Service\, Rosenblum has dedicated her career to preserving and sharing the stories of the Jewish partisans through public lectures\, scholarship\, and educational initiatives. \n\nJewish Partisan Educational Foundation: Pictures of Resistance\nPlease donate generously to make programs like this possible. SUMMARY:Armin Stern. Journeys and Escapes Presentation by Erik Riedel\, Frankfurt a.M. (Germany)
DESCRIPTION:The artist Armin Stern (1883–1944)\, born near Pressburg (now Bratislava)\, moved to Frankfurt in 1900 to study painting. Despite numerous travels and periods of study in Paris\, Brittany\, the Netherlands\, and Ticino\, Frankfurt remained the center of his life. After being excluded from an exhibition at the Frankfurt Kunstverein in 1933 because he was a “non-Aryan artist\,” he relocated with his family to Bratislava\, which had by then become part of Czechoslovakia. \nImage above: Armin Stern\, Ascona\, 1928. Jewish Museum Frankfurt \n\nAs the situation there also grew increasingly perilous\, Stern initially sought to emigrate to the British Mandate of Palestine. By his own account\, the painter had become a Zionist while still a schoolboy; during an extended stay in Eretz Israel in 1933–34\, he had already gained intimate knowledge of the country while simultaneously looking for a place to settle with his family. In 1938\, he obtained an entry visa for the USA; he settled in New York and participated in several exhibitions. After five years of exile in the United States\, Armin Stern died of heart failure in July 1944\, just days before he was due to be naturalized. \nAlthough Stern had been a successful and popular landscape and portrait painter\, he had all but fallen into oblivion. This changed only with the publication of his biography by his granddaughter in 2008 and a cabinet exhibition at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt a year later. Now\, the artist’s estate—gifted by his grandchildren—enriches the art collection of the Jewish Museum. \n\nArmin Stern\, Jerusalem\, 1933. Watercolor\, ink\, and pencil. Jewish Museum Frankfurt \n\nErik Riedel is head of exhibitions at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt and curator of the museum’s Ludwig Meidner Archive. The archive consists of the artistic estates of Ludwig and Else Meidner and several other artists who were forced into exile. Erik Riedel has curated numerous exhibitions on 19th- and 20th-century art\, for instance on Moritz Daniel Oppenheim\, Ludwig and Else Meidner\, Charlotte Salomon\, and Arie Goral. Apart from several exhibitions catalogues he has published the catalogue raisonné of Ludwig Meidner’s sketchbooks and the conference proceedings “Ludwig Meidner. Expressionism\, Ecstasy\, Exile” (2018)\, as well as the catalogue raisonné of Ludwig Meidner’s paintings until 1927 (2023). \nThis event is part of the online series “Flight or Fight. stories of artists under repression.” \n\n\n\n\n\nA special exhibition Armin Stern: Painter and Zionist is on view until January 3\, 2027\, in the “Art and Exile” room of the permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt. \n\nEXHIBITION INFORMATION\nPlease donate generously to make programs like this possible. SUMMARY:Understanding Past Realities of the Holocaust.Photography versus Art With Dr. Christoph Kreutzmüller (Berlin) and Dr. Rachel Perry (Boston)
DESCRIPTION:To mark the November Pogrom of 1938 (euphemistically called “Kristallnacht”)\, a discussion\, “Understanding Past Realities of the Holocaust: Photography versus Art” will take place on 4 November 2026. Historians Dr Christoph Kreutzmüller and Dr Rachel Perry examine how photography and art depicted the Nazi state-orchestrated campaign of terror perpetrated against Jewish men\, women and children across Germany\, Austria and the Sudetenland from 9 to 10 November 1938 (the November Pogrom). The historians ask what photography and art reveal about the lived realities of the victims of the Pogrom\, the interactions surrounding the violence and the broader society in which the violence was perpetrated. \n\nThe event will be live-streamed and recorded. Questions can be submitted through this form. \n\nThe discussion is organized by the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme together with the Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted\, Ostracized and Banned Art\, and the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations. \n\nPhoto credit: Christoph Kreutzmüller \n\nREGISTRATION LINK \nOPENING REMARKS: \n\n\nMs. Melissa Fleming\, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications\nHis Excellency Mr. Ricklef Johannes Beutin\, Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations\nMs. Rachel Stern\, Executive Director\, The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted\, Ostracized and Banned Art\n\nSPEAKERS: \n\nDr. Christoph Kreutzmüller\, Deputy Project Director\, LastSeen: Pictures of Nazi-Deportations\, Selma Stern Center for Jewish History\, Berlin\, Germany\nDr. Rachel Perry\, Art historian\, curator and educator\, Weiss Livnat Graduate Program in Holocaust Studies at the University of Haifa and Gratz College\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Christoph Kreutzmüller \nDr. Rachel Perry \nRachel Stern \n\nDr. Christoph Kreutzmüller\, the Berlin based historian and educator\, is the Deputy Director of the award-winning research project.
